This Program for skill development training for women, supported by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India was started with the following objectives.

1. To train rural women as hand pump mechanics and construction engineers/masons.

2. To involve rural women as equal partners in the development process by taking on charge of maintenance of their crucial safe drinking water sources.

3. To regularize repair and maintence of hand pumps and rainwater harvesting tankas with the support of trained rural women hand pump mechanics.

4. Provide hand on training that shall instill self-confidence amongst rural women to take collective decision at village level.

5. To disseminate in the project villages existing technology of construction of rainwater harvesting tankas.

6. To demystify technology of hand pump repair and maintenance techniques by training rural women as barefoot hand pump mechanics.

7. To highlight the capacity and potential of rural women that they too can become hand pump mechanics and masons, which is, considered men’s domain.
